The challenger of reelectionist mayor in Panabo City has bared that he decided to run due to the persistent prodding and enlightening advice of a parish priest in the city.

Engr. Rico Peligro, younger brother of Davao del Norte provincial administrator, said yesterday an interview that it was one and a half years ago that he came to met San Agustin Parish priest Rex Barte.

He said that the priest soon advised him to run to work “for change” in the city owing to the lack of projects and alleged non-performance of the administration of Mayor Jose Silvosa.

“From that time on, Fr. Rex kept on urging me until I gave in and then I started to convince my wife and it gave us a lot of difficulties to reach this decision considering the nature of politics,” he added.

Peligro, a mechanical engineer in profession, said that his running is anchored on seeking change, good governance, responsibility, innovation and competence.

The 34-year-old engineer is a contractor engaged in building irrigation and cableways for cooperatives in Zamboanga Peninsula areas. He grew up in Panabo City .

Last December 20 he was chosen an outstanding alumni in the field of engineering by his college alma mater, University of Southeastern Philippines .

Earlier, Mayor Silvosa of the Lakas-Kampi-CMD welcomed Peligro of the Liberal Party saying that it is each man’s right to seek for public office under a democratic country.

The mayor said that former Mayor Rey Gavina “until the last minute” was encouraged to run for a mayoral comeback but he decided not to run “maybe because we’re standing on the same (Lakas) party principle, he took oath before the party and there’s no reason for him to fight me”.

Months before the December 1, 2009 deadline of the filing of the certificate of candidacy, Gavina, who is also a Lakas member though outsider this time, had been much talked of to be fighting against his successor Silvosa.

Gavina completed his three terms as mayor in 2007.

Silvosa added that just the same he has an opponent in the person of Peligro, who is reportedly back up by Governor Rodolfo del Rosario, the LP provincial chairman.

Silvosa, on the other hand, is being supported by Del Rosario’s nephew Congressman Anton Lagdameo of the second district.

“I am running banking on my own performance. If I had not performed, I would have not run then,” the mayor replied to the charge of non-performance of his administration. (Cha Monforte/Rural Ufrban News)
