Illegal detention case vs. arresting NBI agents – Cee O

NOV. 4-10, 2010

(Nov. 4)  Tagum City Mayor Rey Uy will be filing a case against agents of the National Bureau of Investigation who arrested this Thursday four members of the Tagum City Traffic Management Unit (TCMU).

Mayor Uy said the arrest made by still unidentified NBI agents has no reason and bypassed coordination of the local police.

“I’m prepared to file illegal detention case against the NBI,” said the mayor in an interview with DXDN Ukay Tagum.

TCMU chief Marcos Villanueva identified the arrested traffic officers as Pacifico Bantialan Jr., Ariel Bardinas, Cyrian Lenueva ug Rodolfo Rondina Sr. He claimed that the traffic officers were arrested at gunpoint. They were accordingly brought to Davao City and locked up at NBI detention center.

Reports have it that the NBI agents swooped down the city and one by one arrested the city traffic officers a day after the TCMU apprehended a passenger van owned by one of the NBI agents.

The NBI reportedly cited that the arrested traffic officers violated the still existing gun ban as they were carrying .45 cal handguns.

But the mayor said that they were authorized by the police to carry firearms even as he cited that they have been greatly helping in the drive to maintain peace and order in the city.

“May authority sa PNP ang ilang pagdalag armas kay nag-implementar usab na og balaod maong angayan lang nga armasan sila”,  he added.

On the other hand, Tagum City chief of police Guisseppe Geralde said that the arming of some members of the TCMU and Civil Security Unit (CSU) was meant to give protection to them as they are having already varying threats to their lives in helping to carrying out law enforcement in the city.

“One enforcer was recently killed in Pandapan,” PSupt. Geralde said in a Radyo Ukay interview.

As this developed, Mayor Uy has intensified implementing his longstnading existing policy of disallowing plying passengers’ vans to solicit passengers along the city’s highway section.

The NBI Davao City headquarters could not be reached for comments.  ((Rural Urban News/Cha Monforte WITH REPORTS FROM RUEL DAGSANGAN)
