Parilympics 2010 reels off for 30th anniversary of Diocese of Tagum

Sept. 23-29, 2010

Priests in DavNor, Comval will  compete in “You’ve Got No Talent”, treasure-hunting in Diwalwal, etc;  Arrival of Papal Nuncio in Tagum City, National Tennis Cup of top-seed priests slated

In grandest celebration for the 30th year anniversary of the Diocese of Tagum on October 11, the Parilympics 2010 has reeled in Carmen town early last week and at present bonding games, musical and dance challenge contests solely participated in by all priests of the diocese have been held in various schedules and venues rotating in different  parishes in Davao del Norte and Compostela Valley provinces.

For such celebratory cheer and bonding, some 117 priests from 41 parishes, quasi-parishes and chaplaincies of Diocese of Tagum led by Most Reverend Bishop Wilfredo Manlapaz compete in various games, vie for their own “You’ve Guts No Talent”, belt out against each other in videoke challenge, ballroom dancing, stand-up comedy contests, mimic the abanteros in the treasure hunting contest in Diwalwal, and many other gimiks to play for enjoyable watch of the celebrating parishioners.

The participating priests ranged from the oldest 72-year-old Fr. Jose “Jong” Sison who was ordained in April 1967 to the youngest 27-year-old Fr. Reynante Monares, who was ordained in March 2009.

The festivities will culminate in a grand socio-cultural night in October 11 anniversary with the expected presence of His Holiness Pope Benedict’s representative to the Philippines- Most Reverend Papal Nuncio Edward Joseph.

Diocese of Tagum Chancellor Fr. Tom Avila, in an interview with the Valley &  City Chronicle, said that the Parilympics 2010 is also being held in celebration for the 40th jubilee year anniversary of the establishment of the first Gagmayng Kristohanong Katilingban (GKK) of the diocese though supposedly in 2008, for the 5th year anniversary of the dedication of the New Christ the King Cathedral and as a local culmination of the Year of the Priests.

He said that the diocese’s Parilympics is supposed to be held in a year when there is Olympics but it was reset for two more years in time for the 30th year after the Diocese of Tagum was declared by His Holiness Pope John Paul II on October 11, 1980 as a full-pledged diocese from being a suffragan diocese of the Davao Metropolitan archdiocese.

Last October 13 the Parilympics 2010 kicked off at Carmen parish with a mass and grand opening with initial events that included trisikad racing, opening of basketball competition between the Yellow Team of Davao del Norte Clergy and the Green Team of Compostela Valley Clergy, volleyball, cheer dance competition, and in the evening, musical contests.

Last Sept. 20 at Sto. Tomas the game 2 of tennis and volleyball games was supposedly held but due to rains it was held on the next day at the Queen of Apostles College Seminary, Seminary Drive, and in the evening, priests competed for contests in accoustics, stand-up comedy, and ballroom dancing.

All the roads of the diocesan priests will lead to Mt. Diwalwal in time with the Sept. 28 parochial feast of the gold-rich mining area, where they will compete for the treasure hunting, doble kara challenge, amateur hour and balak (poem) contests.

On October 1, two days before the parochial feast of Sta. Teresita sa Batang Hesus of Nabunturan parish, the priests will converge and compete for the game 4 of volleyball games and in the night they will outdo each other for “You’ve Guts No Talent”, a talent search patterned after ABS-CBN’s hit “Pilipinas Got Talent” from where singer Jovit Baldovino rose to stardom. There will also be folk dance and quiz bee contests in an awaited fun-filled night.

On October 4, priests will take time out from the games and contests as they will they take a retreat in Revier Retreat House at Catalunan Grande, Davao City, with Bishop Manlapaz, who  will hit his 25th year in serving as bishop of the diocese by March 20 next year.

On October 5, friendship games between the diocesan priests and the Remase (Regional Major Seminary) community in indoor games such as chess, dama, game of generals, scrabble and others will be held.

On the October 11 anniversary day, at 11 A.M. a thanksgiving mass will be held at the New Christ the King Cathedral, and in the evening the grand socio-cultural night-awarding rite will be held at the Clergy Development Center, Seminary Drive, with the expected presence of Papal Nuncio Joseph, administrator of Manila Apostolic Nunciature, government officials and other guests.

Morever, Fr. Avila also bared that on October 12 to 14 the National Tennis Cup of top-seed tennis players among Catholic priests nationwide will be held at the Rotary Park, Tagum City.

The national tennis competition of priests has since been played in various parts in the country in line with this year’s celebration of the Year of the Priests. (Rural Urban News/Cha Monforte)
