NEWS: Silvosa hits critics on luminous motorcycle stickers

By Cha Monforte, Rural Urban News

Panabo City Mayor Jose “Joe” Silvosa lambasted critics to the city policy on imposing the bearing of luminous stickers to single motorcycles in the city, saying “they’re making irresponsible comments meant to destroy my administration in this political season”.

Unnamed critics presumably Silvosa’s electoral rivals have earned non-minced words from the mayor who responded to the charge that the policy reeked of charging a new taxation burden to owners of single motorcycles.

In the revised revenue ordinance number 04 approved last year, single motorcycles are required to bear luminous stickers issued by the city government and owners have to pay sticker pay of P100 and P50 monitoring fee every year

But in an interview Silvosa replied: “It is intended for the protect people and property and it is within the power of the local government unit and the Sangguniang Panglungsod to enact such measure”.

He said that on the particular score of preventing crimes, and “given that most of those who committed crimes in the city were riding on single motorcycles, the luminous stickers can help law enforcers in their pursuit, investigation and arrest, and if motorcycles which don’t bear our stickers and which are used by criminals can be immediately presumed to be coming outside Panabo”.

“It serves as a deterrent to crimes,” he said adding that crimes such as holdups and extrajudicial killings where single motorcycles are being used for the entry and exit of criminals have been happening anywhere else as reported by local tabloids.

He said his pretentious rivals were bankrupt of legitimate issues to hit him and have only to peddle petty and irresponsible ones.

Silvosa, a Lakas reelectionist for second term, is seen by pundits as on higher upperhand in this electoral time as he is currently rivaled by Engr. Rico Peligro (Liberal Party), younger of Davao del Norte provincial administrator Rufo Peligro, and reportedly an irrigation and cableway contractor concentrating in Zamboanga Peninsula .

Peligro is reportedly backed up by a politically bound San Agustin Parish priest Rex Barte in Panabo. (Cha Monforte/Rural Urban News)
