Police chief Geralde blasts Councilor Aala over false kidnapping report

Dec 9-15, 2010

Tagum City police chief Giusseppe Geralde slammed City Councilor Tristan Royce “Bong“ Aala for rashly mouthing during the last Monday’s session that there was a kidnapping of pupils of Mankilam elementary school which Geralde said to be false but had caused brief panic and alarm of several parents.
“I was caught in complete surprise when the city council called me up about it,” PSupt. Geralde said in Wednesday’s interview with the Valley & City Chronicle.
“Even if the kidnapping report was not true, I have already my report submitted to Mayor (Rey) Uy and to the DILG (Dept. of Interior and Local Government),” he added.
Aala stood last Monday’s session during the plenary and relayed the report he received about the kidnapping of two pupils of Mankilam elementary school, though he said he would still have to confirm and coordinate yet the city police on the matter.
“Dapat i-confirm sa niya sa police usa siya mo privilege speech kay maka panic man gud sa mga tawo,” Geralde said.
“It was still a raw, unverified and unconfirmed information,” he said referring to what Aala relayed to his colleagues in a session that has long been covered live by DXDN Radyo Ukay Tagum.
The Valley & City Chronicle texted Aala for comments but at presstime he has not yet replied.
In separate interview, Mankilam barangay captain Antonio Rio said that indeed “there was no kidnapping and it was a false info.”
He said that the report about a white van pursuing two pupils and men inside it snatching the kids was not true.
In his investigation with city social service officer Nora Lupiba, he said, two female Grade 2 pupils known to be “frequently absent during Fridays” had actually gone swimming in the Libuganon creek near Garcia village Wednesday last week.
And since they had been seen to be wet and groping for having no clothes to change on, a barangay kagawad in Libuganon spotted them and helped them go home.
“It was all that,” Rio said. (Rural Urban News/Cha Monforte)
