Former Congressman Pantaleon “Bebot” Alvarez will surely be staging a political comeback to join in the toss up for the congressional post in the District 2 in the Davao del Norte by 2010, informed an unimpeachable source, who is still one of the trusted lieutenants of Alvarez in Tagum City.
Speaking on the condition of anonymity, the source said yesterday that Alvarez last week bared in Tagum his political plan with his intimate confreres.
Alvarez, the source said, has established close contacts in Manila with national leaders of Nationalist People’s Coalition (NPC), one of whom is Senator Francis “Chiz” Escudero, one of the current presidential hopefuls.
“This time around Bebot Alvarez would no longer be a reluctant congressional candidate as before,” the source said.
He said that politics did not smile good to Alvarez in the previous elections as he was first reluctant to run as congressman and then later made through his running close before the elections.
“That happened in 2004 and 2007 elections and to his dismay despite his good logistics, he failed to organize a well-monitored political organization,” the source said.
He said that because of such reluctance, his political leaders during his past incumbency as a congressman were made to “wait and see” and “many already jumped to other political camps”.
The source said that Alvarez will align with the camp of Mayor Rey Uy, his “long-time barkada (friend)”.
“The plan (of Alvarez) is to win back his trusted political lieutenants and leaders and establish a political organization while there is still good enough time before the November filing of the certificate of candidacy,” he said.
“We will organize beginning from towns to barangays to puroks,” the source boasted.
Alvarez, reports said, poured a lot of campaign funds in the last 2007 elections but failed in his congressional bid.
“The money was not handled well, and it was not monitored well when it flowed down as some bungoton (mischievous political leaders) entered into the scene,” said the source.
Alvarez was elected as District 2 congressman from 1998 to 2001 and was later appointed as the secretary of the Dept. of Transportation and Communication (DoTC).
Amidst allegations on the so-called Piatco bribery scandal, he resigned as DoTC secretary in June 2002 even as he denied the charges as untrue and unfounded.
