The Monday’s barangay polls

Oct 21-27, 2010

COMMENTARY/ EDITORIAL

As though it was just yesterday that the barangay poll was heard to push through. Now by Monday and with the limited time of the campaigning, the barangay polls would finally unfold for our free casting of votes.

At press time, we’re at least thankful that for our dear provinces of Davao del Norte and Compostela Valley no life of any candidate has been wasted, or no violent incident has occured even if both of the provincial police commands bared of only few remote barangays on their “watchlist” than as “hotspot areas”. Really, the police chief of Mabini town in Comval hit a good perception that even in remote villages where communist rebels are known to be incursing and operating occurence of violence can be discounted because almost always potential or running hostilities betwen village people are taken care of under the internal and indigenous systems of settling conflicts of the indigenous people, the known IP. So we’re thankful for the lumads especially their wisdom-giving elders who will not waste time in rebuking a lumad candidate wrecking havoc to the tranquility of the natives in the mountains just because of the politics of the lowlands that reach up the highlands like an import.

The peace notwithstanding, we are having current silence on the Comelec’s preparation to the near Monday’s polls. There seems to be unpanicky efforts for the Monday’s polls, and we hope that this means that all election voting paraphernalias have already reached the localities and the teachers are already prepared for the manual polls after tasting that successful but rainy and queieng-characterized automated polls last May. That includes, too, the security oplans and coordination of the police, army and civilian authorities. We hope that no event, a stinger of sort, that would explode amidst showing the relaxed mood of everybody to the polls.  As it is, we rely on the villagers’ watchfulness and bayanihan cooperation to make the unautomated barangay polls also a successful one.

The way it looks now, it seems we’re in for a secured, non-controversial conduct of barangay polls in our provinces. But at this late, we should hope for the best but still brace for any worst.- Cha Monforte
