NEWS: Ebdane: “my running won’t split admin votes”, sure to run as President

oct 10
TAGUM CITY- Public Works Secretary Hermogenes Ebdane who graced a gathering of Mindanaons here yesterday that his running would not split the administration votes even as he denied that it was President Arroyo who made him decide to run for the presidency in the 2010 polls.
Ebdane spoke before some 1,000 participants to the Davao Regional Congress of Mindanao Leaders organized by Mindanaoans for Mindanao (M4M), but he immediately left the CAP Auditorium here saying he had to attend pressing matters in his department to respond to Luzon’s calamity wrought by typhoons “Ondoy” and “Pepeng”.
He estimated that the damage made by the two typhoon to infrastructures reached to at least P1 billion.
The gathering was drawing support to Mindanao leaders reportedly gunning for senatorial slots regardless of their political parties who included Agusan del Sur Rep. Rodolfo “Ompong” Plaza of the Nationalist People’s Coalition, Atty. Adel Tamano of the Nacionalista Party, former Buidnon Rep. Nereus Acosta of the Liberal Party and Atty. Eid Kabalu, spokesman of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front.
Sec. Ebdane, in a press conference with the local media, said he would surely run saying “it’s either for President or farming” when prodded if it is either for President or for Senator.
He recalled that he confided with the President his intention just two days before Defense Sec. Gilbert Teodoro was endorsed as the Lakas-Kampi-CDM standard bearer late September, but Arroyo said to him he was already late in conveying his intention.
“In the end, the President just said to me ‘it’s your future and good luck,” Edbane narrated adding that the his running is “at the insistence of many organizations” that have reach in barangays and “even churches”.
He declined yet to bare what party he would be running under, but he said: “I have my own party, and it would be better to have our own party… and in fact three other parties are offering me to be their candidate.”
On the other hand, Rep. Plaza said that the election of many Mindanaons to the Senate through the Mindanaons voting as a united bloc could not have been possible now citing the results of the last polls when some candidates who had no logistics won.
He said that “there is now greater awareness among Mindanaons to influence the political direction in the national government and hence the need to have a strong representation of Mindanao in the Senate.”
Kabalu of MILF, who was present, on the other hand, called the national government to treat the long-pestering Mindanao problem as a “national agenda” and for Mindanaons to assert the Mindanao agenda and unite for their greater representation.
“It is not far-fetched that one day we could a President coming from Mindanao,” he said.
Present during the congress were Davao del Norte vice Governor Victorio “Baby” Suaybaguio Jr, former Vice Gov. Anthony Rafael del Rosario, Mt. Diwalwal barangay captain Franco Tito, and other provincial, barangay officials and sectoral leaders from Davao del Norte and Compostela Valley provinces. (Cha Monforte/Rural Urban News)
