BM Lu on the deck for vice governorship by 2013 polls

aug 26-sept 1, 2010

Political observers at this early are now seeing that Boardmember Dr. Daniel Lu of Sto. Tomas (District 2) “is on the deck” for vice gubernatorial draft comes the 2013 polls.

Some political and media circles count that should last-termer Tagum City Mayor Rey Uy of District 1 run for governor by 2013 Lu would seem an easy District 2 pick  as his vice gubernatorial tandem.

This is so, they said, based on the following facts that others who are also qualified to be Uy’s vice gubernatorial man are running short of their respective political luck now due to their term and age: Last-termer Sto. Tomas Mayor Maximo Estela is already “old enough”, Carmen Mayor Marcelino Perandos, Igacos Mayor Aniano Antalan, BE Dujali Mayor Lolita Moral  and Panabo Mayor Jose Silvosa  Sr have still one more term to bid being second-termers.

Coming next as qualified vice gubernatorial material are the vice mayors in District 2 but all of them as now either in their first term or second term.

Furthermore, also a qualified vice gubernatorial former Panabo Mayor Rey Gavina is accordingly eyeing for mayoral seat comes 2013.

And next after the vice mayors for picking are the boardmembers, and Lu, a former Sto. Tomas vice mayor and a first-termer boardmember, is seen as the most qualified among  the member of the Lakas-Kampi-CMD incumbents.

Lu got 75,112 votes in the last May 10 polls placing second in the race of ten candidates for boardmember in the Ditrict depsite that he got no backing from the monolithic Iglesia ni Cristo.

And kibitzers said that “Lu would only have to win in Tagum City and forget the rest of District 1 in order to win in vice gubernatorial race.”

Presented by the scenario, Lu just laughed it off  saying,”But I’m most interested to run for mayor in Sto. Tomas. I’m senior than Eric (Estela) and I defeated him in the vice mayor’s race in 2004”.

“But in that case, that would be an Uy-Lu tandem, the word Uylu means means blessing, or it might be the reverse, luuy,” he commented, laughing.

Reports said that Eric Estela, a second-termer councilor, is being groomed for  eventual mayorship to succeed his father Mayor Maximo Estela who would graduate his third term by 2013.

He reckoned that the 2013 election in his hometown Sto. Tomas would still be a three-corner fight. It might be Lu vs. Romano vs Batosalem fight.

He said that defeated mayoral bet Fr. Em-Em Luego is still contemplating until December whether to continue joining the field of politics or not.

In his political career, Lu never ran for councilor’s seat and instead ran and won as opposition vice mayor in 1988 polls.

In 2004 polls he was the common vice mayoral bet of Dario Romano who ran and got reelected as vice mayor and Mayor Estela who was unopposed. He easily won. But earlier, in 1992 polls he ran for mayor under the provincial slate of Sebastian, and he lost and rested for a while until 2001 polls when he ran back to bidding for vice mayor with Romano for mayor. They both won.

Lu completed his three terms as vice mayor. In the last polls he ran and won as boardmember.

“But it all depends on the kingmaker (Tonyboy Floirendo),” he said.

In District 2, it is the political kingmaker who chooses who would be the next mayors in towns covered because of the huge electoral funding and the vast Tadeco votes.

Lu said in an interview with the Valley & City Chronicle that he has long reconciled with the district kingmaker  for after he was with the opposition sometime in the past.

Asked on his stance to the current political alignment of forces between the Floirendos as represented by District 2 Congressman Anton Lagdameo vis-a-vis the District 1 kingmaker Governor Rodolfo del Rosario (RDR), he said: “Floirendo gyod ko. Di pod nako kalaban si RDR kay kinsa man ko nga gamay lang nga politiko.”

But back to the his being “on the deck” now for a vice gubernatorial prospect under an Uy-Lu tandem, he said that would still be a far scenario and many things would happen.

Meantime, “I have to serve for my best, that’s why I’m here almost daily in Capitol.”

Asked on a Chinese tandem, he said he does not know even how to speak Chinese in the first place. His lolo Dama first arrived from mailand China and traded in Pagsabangan and Asuncion, and in 1956 sailed with his family including his father Ramon across the sharks-infested Asuncion river to settle and trade at Kimamon. By 1958 they transferred to the poblacion. He’s tisoy, half-Chinese blood as his mother is a Leytena.

Boardmember Lu, current SP flooleader, grew up in Sto. Tomas, had his elementary and high school studies in the same place and took up medicine course in Cebu.

After a short stint as surgical intern of Brokenshire Hospital in Davao City (1980-1981), Dr. Lu came back to his origins serving as doctor to his townmates. He’s known as the doctor of the masses. In 1986 he built his own hospital.

But he says he doesn’t get rich via his profession saying, “di ko madato, kay di ko kasingil”. (Rural Urban News/Cha Monforte)
